Stenting and Aggressive Medical Management for Prevention of
Recurrent Stroke in Intracranial
Stenosis (SAMMPRIS) Trial
This multi-center clinical trial was funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). Fifty sites participated in the trial and 451 patients were enrolled. The purpose of the trial was to compare aggressive medical management alone versus aggressive medical management plus angioplasty and stenting (a surgical procedure to help open a partially blocked artery to the brain). The INTERVENT lifestyle health coaching program was selected as the lifestyle modification component of the trial. INTERVENT coaches provided education and support on specific healthy behaviors aimed at risk factor reduction.
Carotid Revascularization and Medical Management for Asymptomatic Carotid Stenosis Trial (CREST-2)
Funded for $39.5 million over a seven-year period by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), the CREST-2 trial will enroll 2,480 patients from 120 medical centers in the U.S. and Canada. The aim of the CREST-2 trial is to determine if intensive medical management alone is as effective as carotid artery surgery or stenting plus intensive medical management in preventing a stroke caused by the buildup of plaque in a carotid artery. INTERVENT is providing its telephonic and online lifestyle health coaching program to all participants in the trial. A team of co-investigators from the Mayo Clinic in Florida, the University of Maryland, the Medical University of South Carolina and the University of Alabama at Birmingham is directing the clinical trial.
Peer-reviewed articles are written by experts and critically reviewed by several anonymous independent experts in the same field of study before being published in a scientific journal. Because the reviewers specialize in the same scholarly area as the authors, they are considered the authors’ peers. This peer review process helps to insure the article’s quality in terms of methodology and validity of outcomes. It also insures that published articles reflect solid scholarship and advance the state of knowledge in a discipline.
